Zanzibar Research

Permits are required for research in Zanzibar.

COSTECH research clearance does not extend to Zanzibar.

Researchers intending to conduct research in Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba) will need to contact the relevant authorities in Zanzibar:

The Head of Zanzibar National Archives
P.O. Box 116,

Tel: 0255 024 2230342

It is possible to apply for research clearance through the Chief Ministers Office (now the First Vice Presidents Office); this option, while marginally cheaper, is significantly more time consuming than applying through the archives. Note that the ZNA processes research permit applications for all forms of research, not just archival work, for which they charge a processing fee of 10,000 TSh.

The Zanzibar National Archives (Nyaraka za Taifa) is open to researchers upon payment of the applicable fee and presentation of a research permit. Fees range from $20 for 1-3 days up to $150 for 6 months to 1 year.

The catalogue has been partially digitised here.
